NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Kwanzaa gets underway on Thursday with people from all religions taking part.

The cultural holiday of harvests focuses on seven core principles including Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith.

Families and friends get together to share meals and enjoy music and art.

Created in 1966 as way to bring African Americans back to their cultural roots in Africa, Kwanzaa means 'first fruits of the harvest.'

Each night, a candle is lit in celebration.

Three black candles represent the people; three red candles represent blood or hard work and one green candle represents the harvest.

One of the largest and longest running celebrations of Kwanzaa takes place at the AmericanMuseumm of Natural History.

Saturday marks the 35th celebration of Kwanzaa at the museum.

Admission is free with an entrance ticket.
