On the road with City Harvest

Posted: Updated:

It is Christmas Eve morning and Marlon Newell has just made his first stop.

"We're on the Upper East Side off Lexington and 88th Street," Newell, a City Harvest driver, explained. "Basically we're picking up whatever food they have, could be canned goods."

Newell picks up bread and pastries from a restaurant.

City Harvest delivers 1 million pounds of food a week to New Yorkers in need.

"There's a tremendous amount of wasted food as we all know," said Matthew Reich, the VP of operations. "So what we do is divert the food from the waste stream and we bring it to people who are in need in New York City."

Next stop? The Food Emporium on the Upper East Side where Newell picks up 3 carts of fresh produce. After one more pickup, the truck makes its final and perhaps most important stop: the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, where clients eagerly await their Christmas delivery, almost 7,000 pounds of food. The Rev. Glenn Chalmers said the success of the operation is a team effort.

"It's not just us doing it, it's not just city harvest doing it," Chalmers said. "It's a lot of organizations and we really rely on each other to help each other."

If you want to donate food, go to cityharvest.org.

If you're in need of food call 311 and you'll be directed to a local emergency food provider in your neighborhood.
