PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

He's an Army National Guardsman -- making a recovery some are calling a holiday miracle.

Rashaad Gregory suffered what's being called an internal decapitation.

Now most people would die from being internally decapitated, but the Army Specialist not only survived, he's up and walking around.

Gregory lifts himself to his walker, doing what many thought -- impossible.

The 19-year-old was injured in a car crash four months ago.  His skull was severed from his spine.

Now he's walking.

"Mind over matter.  It's really something that I've come to rely on -- my positive attitude," he said.

His attitude with the help of neurosurgeons at Barrow Neurological Institute kept him alive and moving forward.  Using new surgery methods, doctors reattached his skull to his spine with screws and a titanium rod.

"For him to be able to not only move his arms and legs with high cervical to the point where he's walking four months out.. it's shot of a miracle," said Barrow neurosurgeon Dr. Kumar Kakarla.

Miracles happen every day.

Gregory doesn't remember the crash or the surgery.  He woke up one month after the accident unable to walk.

"Some days I still wake up and it's hard to believe I'm still here.  This is good.  I'm still here makes you happy and appreciate it more," he said.

His next step is walking with a cane.

"I can't take it slow.  I've tried to for the benefit of my family and them worrying and stuff, but I've never been a slow paced type of person.  I want to progress and I want to progress now."

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
