Macomb County opens nation's first communications and technical operations center

(WJBK) -

Macomb County's new communications and operations center is now open. The center is located in Mt. Clemens.

The new COMTEC facility fully integrates the department of roads, emergency management and police and fire dispatch under one roof, thanks to federal funds. 300 intersections in the county now have the technology to help with emergency response.

"By having that technology the Department of Roads and dispatchers, if you will, are going to be able to sit at their monitor stations and if there's an incident that happens, maybe an accident at an intersection in Macomb County, when they hear that incident taking place from a dispatcher they're going to be able to light up that intersection so that dispatcher has first-hand knowledge of what's happening. They can see it real time and give pre-arrival instructions to police and fire as they're coming. A Police officer or fire fighter doesn't see that, but now, through the eyes of the dispatcher, they're being told 'There's a person on the side of the road'; 'There's an injured individual'; 'Airbags have been deployed' - they can see that because of the technology that's on these cams," explains Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel.

The new facility cost $13.5 million dollars and is one of the most up-to-date communications centers in the country.
