CAUGHT ON CAM: Military dad surprises Mesquite first grader at school

Posted: Updated:

A first grader in Mesquite got the surprise of her little life when her father, who's in the Navy, walked into her school and surprised her just in time for Christmas.

There wasn't a dry eye at Thompson Elementary School Friday morning.

Alyssia hadn't seen or heard from her dad, First Class Petty Officer Junior Finch, for months. He's been on a submarine.

She thought he would be home in three days, but her mom, Monique, fudged a little on the days for the surprise.

‘She's been talking about her dad being here in three days," said Monique. "She likes to do a countdown, so I had to throw her off. ‘When is Daddy coming?' ‘You still have three days, yes.'"

Alyssia and her family will have several weeks to enjoy each other before Dad heads back to his base.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
