Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A teacher's aide, who allegedly struck and inappropriately touched a student, was arrested Friday, according to a release from Boston Police.

Police are investigating the incident, which happened at Boston Community Leadership Academy Friday afternoon. A witness told officers that a teacher's aide allegedly struck and inappropriately touched a special needs student, officials say.

Thomas Burke, 57, of Roslindale was arrested on charges of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (shod foot) and indecent assault and battery on a special needs person.

Students' parents were notified via an automated call.

In a statement, Interim Superintendent John McDonough said, "The safety of our students is our top priority. Our job is to protect and support them in every way possible. We have already reached out to this student's family, as well as to other students who may have had any contact with this particular staff member. We want to thank the Boston Police for responding immediately today and we will continue to work closely with them as this investigation moves forward."

The investigation remains ongoing.
