AK-47 Bandit Caught On Tape During Armed Robbery

PHILADELPHIA -

A local store owner will never forget the sight of an AK-47 a few feet from him inside his store as two gun-toting suspects robbed his 59th Street Mini Market.

"He told me, 'Give me the money. Open the box, give me the money,'" the owner told FOX 29 News.

We are protecting the owner's identity, but surveillance cameras were rolling as the armed robbery went down last Saturday just before 5 p.m.

The two gunmen walked in, one came behind the counter and roughed up the owner and his wife while the other waved the gold-painted AK-47-style military assault weapon around.

"They scared the living daylights both out of the people who work there, and a customer dove into the ground, rightfully so," said Captain Ben Naish, of Southwest Detectives.

The owner quickly complied, and the gunmen helped themselves to all the money in the cash register and cigarettes.

The owner says he had one thing on his mind, do what the robbers want and hope they leave quickly.

"You worried he might come back?" FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser asked the owner.

"I don't know, maybe," he said.

Naish added, "This gun can knock out everybody. We could have had a real tragedy in that store. Fortunately, no shots were fired. Let's hope we keep it that way."

"AK, wow, that's kinda scary," said local record producer James Pattishaw. He's a frequent customer at the 59th Street market right around the corner from his recording studio.

Pattishaw says the owner serves the community, and he was upset to hear about his violent encounter with the AK-47 bandit.

"He always helps us out with the holidays. Sometimes, when guys are short, he helps them out. He's a wonderful guy," Pattishaw said.

"I bet there are people who know about this robbery, and somebody can give us a tip and we can get these guys off the street. That would be a great Christmas present," Naish said.

Police are still trying to determine if the weapon was real. The owner believes it was. Naish says acting cautiously is the best course of action here because if the gun is real, it could cause a real tragedy the next time around.

Police described both suspects as black males who were wearing masks over black hooded jackets, dark-colored pants and tan leather boots.
