PHOENIX (KSAZ) -
Sentencing for a former Phoenix Police officer who plead guilty to manslaughter charges after shooting and killing an unarmed man while responding to a domestic violence call.

Richard Chrisman was also convicted on aggravated assault charges.

A judge sentenced Chrisman to seven years in prison.  Prosecutors asked for 15 years, but the judge decided to give the former officer a lighter sentence.

"I would just simply ask the court for its leniency.. understand that the events that took place October 5, 2010 are nothing short of a tragedy," said Chrisman.

Chrisman asked the judge for leniency and that's what he got -- the minimum sentence of seven years in prison for shooting and killing Daniel Rodriguez.

"I can't equate my pain to that of the family and that of the mother and the loss of her child, but I would ask that you understand that the tragedy reaches both sides," said Chrisman.

Chrisman was on-duty when he was called to Rodriguez's home for a domestic violence call.  He says he shot Rodriguez in self-defense.  Chrisman's partner that day says Chrisman used excessive force.  Rodriguez's mother asked the judge for the maximum sentence of 15 years.

"Not for one minute that I believe I was going to lose my son when I called the police on October 5, 2010.  I feel so guilty," she said.

This is what the Judge Warren Granville said to Chrisman before he was sentenced:

"At it's core, you walked into an unarmed man in his own and escalated the situation to a point where you felt compelled to shoot him dead, you created a situation that caused you to believe you needed to use your gun.. that was reckless."

The judge said part of the reason he gave Chrisman the minimum sentence is because Chrisman's punishment started way before the sentencing.

He says he lost his career and can never work as an officer again and also had to endure years of public humiliation.
