Duck Dynasty Patriarch Suspended After Controversial Interview

Posted: Updated:

"Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson has been suspended indefinitely by the A&E network for controversial comments he made about gays and blacks during an interview with GQ magazine. The suspension has sparked a fierce and widespread debate on social media between supporters and critics of the star of the wildly popular reality show.

Among other things, Robertson made associations between homosexuality, beastiality and terrorism. And he said blacks were happier and better off before civil rights laws were passed. The remarks immediately brought a firestorm of condemnation from LGBT organizations and the NAACP. However, some religious organizations and millions of fans of the show rushed to support Robertson and putting up a Facebook page urging viewers boycott A&E until the suspension is lifted.

Supporters say it's about freedom of speech. Critics claim, while you have a right to speak your opinions, what you say can have consequences. "Duck Dynasty" is on hiatus until January 15 and nine of the ten shows for next season have already been shot. That means Robertson may not need to make an on camera appearance until March. A&E executives may be hoping the whole bruhaha will blow over by then.
