President grants 2 Georgia inmates clemency

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Two Georgia inmates are among the list of 21 who have been granted commutations or pardons by President Barack Obama.

In a release Thursday, White House officials said Helen Alexander Gray, of Tift County, was sentenced in 1996 to 20 years in prison on drug and weapons charges. Her sentence will now expire April 17, 2014.

White House officials say William Ricardo Alvarez, of Marietta, has received a pardon for charges linked to importing and intent to distribute heroin. Alvarez had been sentenced to nine months in prison and four years of supervised release.

In a statement, Obama said the Fair Sentencing Act paved the way for the grants of clemency, which narrowed disparities in punishment for certain drug offenders.
