CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The holiday spirit of a young boy lives on, after his death. Every year, his mom makes sure of it.

Thursday morning, 40,000 toys and hundreds of gift cards were donated to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital patients and their families for the 13th annual Staehely Toy Drive.

The delivery is this year's fulfillment of a promise made 13 years ago by Mark Staehely.

Doctors diagnosed him with cancer when he was 12 years old. He spent the holidays in the hospital, and vowed to return every year with presents for all the kids in the hospital so everyone would have a toy for Christmas.

He kept doing it, even while he remained ill himself. Mark died in 2006, at age 18.

His mother, Sue, has continued the tradition, in partnership with the Make Your Mark Foundation, every year since her son's death.
