Long Island to get 'smart' snow plows

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Some so-called smart snowplows being tested on Long Island promise to give a near real-time picture of road conditions. Once the smart plow is fully deployed, the hope is that it will reduce traffic crashes and save on road maintenance.

Think of it like a computer and GPS hooked up to the snow plow, giving drivers and crews real-time information and ultimately saving money and maybe lives. Basically, the snow plows are equipped with sensors that give road and highway crews data on road conditions, measure temperature and humidity.

The smart plows are expected to be deployed on highways across Michigan, Minnesota and Nevada, and Long Island this winter. They could be a huge help the next time Long Island gets blasted with a storm like last winter, or even the icy conditions crews dealt with Tuesday night.

The plows could help states save money by cutting back on how much salt and sand need to be spread on roads. So far, drivers we talked to said local crews have been keeping things safe.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is funding the system, which is expected to be rolled out in January.

Step through the doors of Hope's Land of Candy in Island Park, Long Island and you''ll be taking a trip back in time. There's no WIFI but they do have a Victrola piano. And then there's the candy.. lots and lots of it.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
