Bern's cooks up culinary hotel

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Get your taste buds ready for a new hotel in town. This one has been seven years in the making, and it's got the Bern's Steakhouse name tied to it.

The Epicurean Hotel in Tampa's Hyde Park is for the foodies out there. It's much more than just a hotel; it's also got a culinary classroom.

There wasn't a ribbon cutting Tuesday, but instead, a steak cutting -- right after the grill was christened.

There's a rooftop bar that looks over South Howard and Hyde Park, a restaurant that'll serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and space for shops and boutiques.

The goal was to fit in with the unique nature of the neighborhood.

"We didn't just want to do just any other hotel," explained David Laxer, the owner of Bern's and a partner in the hotel. "We wanted to have our wine shop here. We wanted to have a great restaurant, a spa, pastry shop. And the big the big differential for us is having the educational part, which is the Epicurean Theatre part."

The wine shop is empty now, but will be full soon -- just in time for their sold-out New Year's celebration.
