Woman's organ donation bonds 2 families

Posted: Updated:
POLK COUNTY, Ga. -

Two families celebrate the season with a special bond that can't be seen.

You see, Kim Garner's daughter Tiffney Waits' heart now beats inside Mason, 15. The story of how Mason received Tiffney's heart is something both families say could only have been orchestrated by God.

When he was three years old, Mason was diagnosed with a heart condition known as Restrictive Cardiomyopathy. Two years later, he underwent a heart transplant.

Unfortunately, doctors told the family that Mason's heart was failing, and he would have to go back on a transplant list.

'I was thinking here we go yet again, let the roller coaster begin" said Tracy Thompson, Mason's mother.

Enter Becky Waits: Tiffney's mother-in-law. Her grandson Zane plays in the high school band with Mason. Little did Becky know a tragedy would forever intertwine the two families.

Tiffney and her two small children were headed to see her sister in Alabama when she was killed a horrific accident. Ironically, sometime before the accident, Tiffney had mentioned to her family she wanted to be an organ donor.

Through their pain, Tiffney's family abided by her wishes. It was a perfect match.

As painful as it is to talk so openly just two months after their devastating loss.. Tiffney's family hopes their story will encourage others to think about organ donation.

Mason is still getting regular checkups. His family knows this first year is going to be critical to the success of his transplant. Since Tiffney's heart was a perfect match...they feel they are ahead of the game.

Mason's mother says, since all of this happened, she's heard from so many of Mason's classmates that they too are now opting to be organ donors.

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.

Everyone hates long lines at security checkpoints and the TSA knows it. Now the TSA is sponsoring a contest to encourage anyone with new ideas about how to make the airport security lines go faster. Often for air travelers, the security checkpoint experience is the worst part of their trip. That's why the TSA turned to the crowdsourcing site Innocentive asking for ideas pledging a total of $15,000 in prize money, with at least one $5,000 award.
