Who Is The “Hackensack Strangler”?

Posted: Updated:
Hackensack, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Just about a year ago the man known as the "Hackensack Strangler", Israel Keyes killed himself in prison while awaiting trial for murder, leaving law enforcement officials with many unanswered questions.

Most recently, Keyes is believed to have kidnapped Hackensack resident Debra Feldman and killed her in upstate New York. His rap sheet also includes a long series of rapes, murders, arson and burglary.

Keyes would work across the county taking people from one place and transporting them sometimes thousands of miles to a preplanned location, using a preplanned kill-kit to off his victims. He would then dismember his victims and discard their bodies in places like lakes.

Drew University criminologist Scott Bonn said that Keyes was a very meticulous serial killer who covered his tracks well. He said that Keyes studied Ted Bundy closely and like Bundy he was an alcoholic and at the end of the day he was a thrill seeking psychopath.

“In other words, it was all about the hunt. He would go to campgrounds, he would go to parks, he would go to hiking trails and track his victims almost like prey, like he would be hunting an animal and track them down and kill them,” he said.

Bonn also confirmed that serial killers are very much different than the rest of us. Many of them are psychopaths who are emotionally disconnected from society. They often treat human beings like objects.

“This is an individual who was just unplugged emotionally. Absolutely no remorse and inability to connect with other human beings and was always about his individual gratification,” Bonn said.
