Double Mercy Killing In Canyon Country And At A North Hills Nursing Home

Posted: Updated:

Lisa Nave would have been about 53 when she ended up incapacitated at the nursing home in the 9600 block of N. Sepulveda in North Hills. Police say she's been in a vegetative state for the past 5 years. When the call first came out that she had been shot I would have never known the extent of this story. That, as police put it, Lisa's brother - Lance Anderson - came the home where he was known. He went to his sister's room, pulled a gun and fired one shot into her head. Lt. Paul Vernon says he put his gun down and went to a courtyard where he waited for police.

It was while at the nursing home that we would learn that Anderson's wife was shot and killed at the Anderson condo in Canyon Country maybe as many as 12 hours earlier. That's when Anderson's neighbor's heard some "boom boom" sounds. The Lt. framed the story as apparently a pair of "mercy killings" and why? Anderson's wife, said Vernon, had dementia. His sister, Lisa Nave, was in a near-comatose state.

Anderson was taken into custody. Meanwhile, as the investigation continues, his Canyon Country neighbors say they're shocked. And, his sister's North Hills neighbors are too.

Police are responding to the Brooklyn Bridge where two whitewashed American flags have been raised. It is not clear who raised the flags or why. The American flags that are normally up at the bridge appear to have been removed. Several officers scaled the bridge and lowered one of the flags at about 11 a.m., reported the Associated Press.

Polluted Gowanus Canal doesn't scare away neighborhood development

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
