Glendale police say they arrested a 31-year-old man responsible for the shooting of a convenience store security guard in October.

Thanks to a tip, detectives identified Monte Henry Alvarez as a potential suspect in a shooting at a Circle K near 58th Avenue and Camelback on Oct. 15.

Alvarez was allegedly trying to shoplift from the store when he was approached by a plainclothes security guard.

A struggle ensued and a second security guard in uniform came in to help.

At some point, Alvarez allegedly pulled out a weapon and fired at the uniformed guard. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and only had one gunshot wound to the body.

Even after being struck, police say the guard was able to Tase Alvarez, but then he pulled out a knife and cut the guard.

Alvarez then allegedly assaulted the plainclothes guard and fled. Both guards had minor injuries and are okay.

Police arrested Alvarez on Monday at his home near Osborn and 59th Avenue.

He faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Police say they believe the media attention and surveillance photos helped lead to Alvarez's capture.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
