Another Blast Of Snow Hits Philly Area, Local Coverage

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Parts of Pennsylvania are preparing for another blast of snow.

Public schools in Philadelphia and many of its suburbs are closed Tuesday because of the impending storm.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Eastern Seaboard, including Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del. Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected.

The new snow comes on the heels of Sunday's wintry weather, which dumped several inches of snow on Philadelphia and northern Maryland.

Areas of central Pennsylvania, including Harrisburg, are expected to get 1 to 3 inches on Tuesday.

All around the viewing area, the rock salt and sand is all over the road. Everyone is getting ready for a second round.

In Cherry Hill, NJ, salt trucks were getting route 70 ready for the morning traffic. An hour before the snow started falling, FOX 29's Steve Keeley talked to shoppers making last minute preparations. One shopper decided buy a snow blower to make post-snow cleanup easier. Though most wanted to stay home, some had to go to work still. Fred Tecce still had to go to work today.

"Stay home and stay in bed," he said. "Because if you get into an accident, you will soon be red!

Kelly Hessedal was in Upper Darby. It was cold and snow is falling heavily. Visibility is very limited, so drivers are going very slowly. There were many near-accidents as Kelly was waiting to go on air. One resident gave Kelly a bright-side look at things.

"Snow's not bad," said local resident Rocky. "Kills all the germs."

Chris Murphy was at the ShopRite in South Philadelphia. People were also buying last minute supplies before the snow. Most people in the region were caught by surprise by the snow on Sunday. Nobody is taking any chances today. After the snow started falling, the really late shoppers flooded to the stores. One shopper, Frank Speeder, even rushed out to stores in shorts.

Dave Schratwieser was in Northeast Philadelphia near the ACME store. Lots of folks have been getting supplies from the store in case this storm continues. The roads have been wet, but clear. Snow plows and crews have cleared the region well.

PennDOT called into Good Day to give us an updated. According to spokesman Gene Blaum, more than 400 trucks will be on the roadways to keep the roads clear in this messy commute. After about one inch of snow falls, the plows will start. They will do their best to keep the snow from sticking to the asphalt.

Bruce Gordon got to Chester County at around 11:00 a.m. Final exams have been postponed at West Chester University. Traffic is relatively like and snow is only accumulating on sidewalks. Snow continues to fall.

"Motorists, give yourself extra time to get to places," he advised.

At PHL, they say they are all prepared to clear the snow, de-ice aircrafts, and accommodate passengers. There are a few canceled flights, but those were made before the snow, in anticipation of any problems. Those looking to pick someone up at the airport should check with their individual flights. There are some arrival delays.

In The First State, Jim Westhoff of DelDOT told Good Day that everyone's been preparing and will be on stand-by for anything.

Stay with FOX 29 for more updates.
