Group: TV rating system doesn't protect kids from violence

A new study has revealed that violent shows on the broadcast networks carry milder parental cautions than those on cable shows.

A watchdog group called Parents Television Council says the TV rating system is failing. The group recently found scenes of stabbings, shootings, rape and decapitation on broadcast channels, but instead of having the stronger rating of TV-MA, which is for mature audiences only, the violent content had a TV-14 rating, which means it's not suitable for children under 14.

But Lizzie Crocker of the Daily Beast says she is skeptical about the claims from the PTC because she says the conservative group is known for trying to get rid of violence and anything "naughty" on TV.

The best advice for parents is to monitor what your children are watching.
