Brooklyn Park couple welcomes set of identical triplets

The old cliché is three's a crowd, but doctors say it's a special rarity to have identical triplets -- and one Brooklyn Park, Minn., family is welcoming their own naturally conceived set.

It's rare to give birth to identical triplets without fertility drugs, but a Brooklyn Park welcomed a new set of three identical daughters 5 months ago and a grown trio of brothers has some advice for the young girls.

Not one of the Hanson triplets weighed over 3 pounds at birth, and their parents certainly have a full house these days. As new parents, they say they don't know any different and will take on whatever challenges their triplets bring -- but the Morris triplets say they don't have to do it alone.

Although they're 50 years old now, the Morris sisters remember what it was like to be raised as a rarity -- the 8th, 9th, and 10th children in the family. Now, the three own the coffee shop Sister Sludge -- but even the regulars don't always know there are three different owners.

Born in 1963, the Morris triplets say they were even predicted by their mother when she was in the hospital with kidney stones a year before their birth.

"She said, 'This is so awful, I would rather have 3 babies at the same time!'" said Maggie Morris-Gronlund. "We were born a year later. Be careful what you wish for. God is listening."

The Hanson family said so far, each of their girls has a distinct personality -- but the mother of the Morris girls said her set traded roles and traits as they grew.

"My mother always said we traded personalities from time to time," Morris-Gronlund explained.

As it turns out, there are certain advantages to being identical triplets.

"Katie did a job interview for me," Judy Morris-Meyer recalled, "and I got the job!"

The Morris triplets say they only worked the system a little every now and again, but the biggest challenge they've faced is being grouped together as one.

"Katie got one speeding ticket; my dad started to threaten to send us to dumbbell school. Not just her -- all of us. Maggie blew up," Morris-Meyer said.

Throughout the years, the triplets have remained close and they opened their coffee shop together 17 years ago.

"We are each others' best friends," Katie Morris-Buch said. "We all have the same philosophy as far as kindness to others, how you should treat and be treated in life.

Yet, while they are alike in many ways, they are all certainly different -- and that's something that's important to remember, the Morris triplets say.

"Don't dress them alike," Morris-Buch cautioned. "Let them be individuals."

As for the future that's still a few years down the line, they recommend the following:

- "Be okay with being different from each other." - Katie

- "Don't date someone who doesn't know who you are, because you are not the same as your sisters." - Maggie

- "They'll be best friends. They will be." - Judy
