2 young boys left home alone die in house fire on Detroit's west side

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Two brothers, aged one and four years old, are dead following a house fire on the 1600 block of Prairie St. in Detroit, according to Detroit Police. The house is located near Livernois and Six Mile Road.

Fox 2's Randy Wimbley reports the boys were home alone when the fire started. They were in a second-floor bedroom and the fire is said to have started on the lower level. Detroit Police Chief James Craig tells us space heaters were inside the home in the area where the fire started, but crews are still investigating to determine exactly how the fire started.

A witness tells Wimbley he may have seen a person throw something inside the home before the fire started. "I saw two guys. They were standing in front of the house and they threw something into the window. And then they got into a Ford F-150, all black with tinted windows and chrome wheels. When I came back I saw the house was into flames," the unidentified witness says.

Chief Craig says what the witness says has "not been determined."

Firefighters were able to pull both the boys from the home. Each was then transported to a separate hospital.

The boys do have three other siblings who were at school at the time of the fire.

Wimbley reports the father may have stepped out to go across the street to get cigarettes from a friend when the fire started.
