Temple University To Cut Seven Intercollegiate Sport Programs

PHILADELPHIA -

Major changes are in store for Temple University and its athletic program.

In a move that will affect nine coaches, 150 student-athletes and 208 roster spots, Temple announced Friday it's cutting almost one-third of the university's intercollegiate programs, FOX 29's Colleen Wolfe reported.

The move will help save a total of $3 million in Temple's $44-million athletic budget and beef up the funds designated for the remaining 17 sports, helping them to be more competitive, the university says.

It's the first time Temple has cut any athletic program since 1986.

So, no more crew, as both the men and women's rowing programs were cut. Also getting the ax are men's baseball, gymnastics, and indoor and outdoor track.

On the women's side, crew is getting cut, as we said, and softball as well.

The planned changes will go into effect after June of next year.

"Temple University sponsored 24 varsity sports," spokesman Larry Dougherty said Friday afternoon. "We were not able to give the quality of student-athlete care that we would like to have, for a Division-1 athletic program, with that amount of sports being sponsored."

The news hit student-athletes, like rowing sophomore Truman Levine, especially hard.

"I mean, I did crew all four years of high school, and it was a big decision on why I chose Temple," he said.

He added, "It's really heartbreaking to see that they don't care much about our team and that they're not going to fund us anymore."

The only good news is the university will still honor students' scholarships in those programs. They're also allowing scholarship athletes affected by the cuts a chance to transfer to other institutions.
