Pinball lives on in New York

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Pinball wizards and novices in New York City have hit the jackpot. Modern Pinball NYC, an interactive pinball showroom, recently opened its doors in Manhattan, giving pinball fanatics a chance to practice their bump, tilt, and backhand shot.

Some say the game is making a big comeback in the city.

"There's new bars every week that have machines, when I first moved here they were pretty few and far between," one player said.

Pinball started in the 1800s, but it was outlawed here in New York City in 1941.

"Pinball machines--to compete with slot machines--started paying out nickels and pennies," said Steve Epstein, Modern Pinball NYC, "and when Fiorello LaGuardia became mayor he had a campaign against gambling so he lumped the pinball machines in with the slot machines."

Epstein says the game became legal again in 1976, but the industry started dying out in the 1990s.

Gamers we spoke to are glad it's coming back in a big way.

"When I was growing up my dad had a business that had a bunch of pinball machines and so I just grew up being around them," one pinball fan said. "Just really love the way they play and I love the sensory overload aspect of them."

Epstein says he welcomes all kinds of customers into his store, but he hopes young kids will come in so the legacy of pinball doesn't die.
