A Northern California family has three new little presents for the holiday season: identical triplets! Experts are calling the birth a statistical sensation. These triplets were conceived without the help of fertility drugs.
Some say it's a crowd; others say it's a charm, but whatever you say, three is the new order of things in the Hepner household.
Everything from bassinets to the cuteness factor will be cubed.
"The holidays will be fun I'm sure... the end of the year is going to be big in our families, I guess," the Hepner's tell FOX 40.
Each new baby is a big deal, but parents Hannah and Tom Hepner are holding onto a bigger deal than most when it comes to their little ones.
Their identical triplet girls are a statistical sensation.
The triplets were produced when a single, fertilized egg split into three. Dr. William Gilbert, director of Sutter Women's Services, told the Sacramento Bee the odds of producing identical triplets without fertility drugs range from 1-in-1-million to 1-in-100-million, adding that the rarity makes it difficult to more accurately calculate the frequency of such births.
And while some may be overwhelmed at the thought of having to do everything times three, this couple is already looking at how to enjoy the new economy of scale that they've been delivered.
"A friend pointed out how many years of teenager he had to go through, whereas we've minimized that period... gonna get it all at once," the Hepners said.
Abby, Brindabella (Brin, for short), and Laurel Hepner were born at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento to parents Hannah and Tom on November 22. Abby weighed 3 pounds, 2 ounces; Brin 3 pounds, 11 ounces; and Laurel 4 pounds. Gilbert told the Bee those were good weights for triplets and said the girls were doing well.
