Bronx derailment

Metro-North tragedy: the victims

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Members of the community of the Riverdale section of the Bronx gathered above the site of the crash of a Metro-North train to pray for the injured and the dead.

Four passengers were killed and more than 60 injured when the commuter train heading to Manhattan from Poughkeepsie derailed Sunday morning near the Spuyten Duyvil station.

James G. Lovell, 58, of Cold Spring, N.Y., was one of those killed. He was an audio technician on his way to Rockefeller Center to help set up the famous Christmas tree.

"He wasn't only my father; he was one of my closest friends," said Finn Lovell, 17. "Just everything you could want in a dad."

Also killed was a 35-year-old nurse from Queens named Kisook Ahn. Her co-workers remember her fondly, saying she loved being a nurse, had infectious energy, and was always in a good mood, no matter how tough the day was.

Another passenger killed was Donna L. Smith, 54, of Newburgh. She was on her way to New York City to watch her sister's choral group perform Handel's Messiah.

And James M. Ferrari, 59, of Montrose, was also killed. The husband and father was on way to work.

All the dead have families and friends in mourning who like this community are finding it hard to comprehend and cope with what has happened.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
