It was certainly something to see and hear. [ Sirens ] The first wave of Detroit's new public safety vehicles paraded through downtown August 22nd. 15 shiny new police cars and 10 ambulances ready for the road. People cheered but no one was happier than the city's bravest.

"We have probably 20 percent of our fleet running right now. We are on life support. We go from worst to best overnight," Jeff Gaglio of POAM Union Stewart said back in August.

Since then six new ambulances have been released. The rest were scheduled to be road ready by mid-November. Instead, they sit here on a lot in Bloomfield Township. The total fleet of 23 ambulances and 100 police cars was a gift to the city from the downtown Detroit partnership. A hefty price - each ambulance cost $161,000.

There are seven ambulances that still need to be delivered to the city of Detroit. Five of them are parked right here in this lot in Bloomfield Township. Two more are inside the building being wrapped. Fox 2 has learned all seven ambulances will be delivered to the city on Tuesday.

As for the police cars, that's a different story.

There are 34 police cars parked here. Fox 2 has learned that there is no timeline for their release. A spokesman for Penske says it's all about the officers' safety.

"Currently we have half of the fleet that was promised to us. We're receiving these vehicles about two a week. We're getting them out there as fast as we can. We do have one vendor that is working on these vehicles," says Sgt. Mike Woody of the Detroit Police Department.

There are 50 new Detroit Police cars on the road. Later in the day a spokeswoman for the Downtown Detroit Partnership confirmed these 34 cars and the 16 others, being re-engineered and outfitted with cameras and video at a second location, will be on the road by the end of the year.

"Because of the equipment and the technology that's involved, it does take some time to get these vehicles equipped and on the street," says Woody.

When it's all said and done DPD will have the most state of the art police cars in the country. The old cars that still work will still be used. The cars that are falling apart will be scrapped and used for spare parts.
