Partnership aims to bring back flags to Hart Plaza

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -

A partnership is seeking to bring back flags to downtown Detroit's Hart Plaza.

Michael Soviak, president of a company that sells and maintains flags and flagpoles, tells the Detroit Free Press he noticed the empty poles during a visit. He says he later learned from officials that the cash-strapped city removed flags more than a decade ago.

The partnership involves the city of Detroit and the nonprofit Suits for Soldiers, which provides assistance to military members, veterans and their families.

The aim is to get flags flying again at Hart Plaza in time for Memorial Day.

Soviak, whose company is Revolution Flag Group, says plans call for raising about $60,000 to pay for and maintain the flags and poles for two years.
