Dragon Con co-founder Ed Kramer pleads guilty

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -

Dragon Con co-founder Ed Kramer pleaded guilty to child molestation charges Monday, just as his trial was set to begin in a Gwinnett County courtroom.  Despite the guilty plea, Kramer still insists he is innocent of the charges.

Jury selection was slated to start earlier in the day, but that never happened.

Back in 2000, two boys claimed that Kramer touched them inappropriately.  Kramer spent the past 13 years delaying his trial, claiming he was in poor health.  That forced Gwinnett County to spend more than $20,000 on his medical bills.

In August, a judge ruled that his health issues would not keep him from going to trial.

Attorneys for Kramer said he only took the plea deal because he was too sick.

The judge ordered Kramer to serve 5 years of a 20 years sentence. Kramer was given credit for two years already served and will serve 34 months under house arrest. Kramer must also pay each of his victims $100,000 in restitution.

In court on Monday, a 28-year-old alleged victim of Kramer told a judge that the crimes left him emotionally paralyzed.

"Before my wife, I had no real relationships with anyone. I was scared," the victim said.

A second victim said that Kramer's guilty plea brings closure.

"The only reason I came forward was because I put two and two together and knew what was going on with the other two victims," the other victim said. "I knew that if it is happening to me and happening to them, it was going to happen to my little brother."

Porter said the plea deal saves the county hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical expenses.
