First-responders get free meals on Thanksgiving

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

First-responders working on Thanksgiving had a chance to eat for free thanks to the generosity of a local business owner and the community.

For the second year in a row, Steven Renner, the owner of Woody's in Virginia Highland, offered free meals to first responders on Thursday.

"When people are at home eating turkey, watching football,  planning their attacks on the mall, these guys are still out there," Renner said.

From firefighters to police officers, hundreds took advantage of the warm meal. The owner said he expected to serve up more than 300 meals.

"Just wanted to give back to my community and the people that, in my opinion, are underappreciated. Underpaid and that's…what we are about," Renner said.

The restaurant was open to the general public on Thursday as well, with proceeds from the day's sales going to the city's firefighter and police funds.

In the same spirit of giving, restaurants and stores in Brookhaven donated food for a traditional Thanksgiving day feast for first responders.

"This is just our way of way of really giving back some kind of sacrifice that these guys make," said Ronnie Mayer, who organized the meal.
