Deep Frying That Turkey? Protect The Environment, Recycle The Oil

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11 / CNS) The City of Los Angeles City Department of Public Works Bureau of Sanitation is encouraging chefs to consider life after Thanksgiving for their cooking oil.

The bureau is accepting recycled household fryer oil at local S.A.F.E. (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, Electronics) Centers, Enrique C. Zaldivar, the bureau's executive director, said today. "Oil will be recycled for fuel and energy," Zaldivar said in a statement.

"If you are frying a turkey for the holiday, remember pouring the oil down the kitchen sink or drain can clog your house plumbing and sewer pipes and may cause sewage backups and overflows," Zaldivar said. "Recycling fryer oil will help protect our environment as you celebrate the holidays."

A maximum of 10 gallons will be accepted in any single donation, Zaldivar said No oil will be accepted from businesses. Recycled oil should be delivered in a closed, leak-proof container to one of six S.A.F.E. Centers at the following locations:

While a thousand people streamed into a courtyard at St. Lucy Parish in the Bronx to watch a reenactment of the crucifixion of Christ, next door a steady trickle of believers quietly collected water from that church's grotto, taking the liquid home to heal, cure, and bless.
