WASHINGTON -

Metro Transit Police are asking the public's help identifying a woman who they say stabbed a man on the Van Ness-UDC Metro station platform Tuesday.

They say the young woman, who is described as in her 20s, was seen arguing with the man on a Red Line train heading for Glenmont. The two got off at Van Ness around 4:45 p.m. and investigators say she was caught on surveillance video stabbing him in the side with an unknown object.

The video shows the woman exit the station. She appears to be holding a cell phone to her ear at one point. Once she reached the street level, she took off and remains on the loose.

According to Metro spokesman Dan Stessel, the man also rode the escalator heading toward the exit, but then turned around and told the station manager he had been stabbed.

The 56-year-old was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injury and will remain there overnight for observation.

The man tells police he does not know the suspect.

Detectives searched the entire station and surrounding area. According to Stessel, they found some evidence that may be related, but not the actual weapon.

Metro has released still images captured from the surveillance video in the hopes that someone will recognize the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Metro Transit Police at 202-962-2121.
