How To Take The Perfect 'Selfie'

Posted: Updated:

The Oxford Dictionaries has chosen "selfie" as its word of the year  for 2013. Selfie is defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media."  Lori Taylor Davis joined us in studio today to give us the do's and dont's of the The Selife, and mostly how to get it right, everytime!

Here's her tips!

Lighting - Dim light may work in person but in a photo it does not do any good. Shadows can show off every flaw on your face. As much as you may beg to differ, flashes can really make you look beautiful, look younger and can be extremely flattering. Another tip I learned from the studios is if you have a big/clunky phone case, sometimes the light of the flash reflects resulting in a blurred image.  Get a simple case OR take the case off before taking the pic.

Makeup - Makeup is extremely important. You don't want to look washed out or too overdone.  The biggest mistake is when you don't match your skin from your face to your neck.  My favorite studio trick is the liquid halo HD foundation that uses special light reflecting technology that blurs out imperfections.  We call it photo filters in a bottle!

Pose - For posing, point out one of your most favorite features and showcase it, whether it be your smile or eyes, and make sure that they are the focal point of the image. Make sure that you find your light and then angles towards.  For the parts of your body that you might not want to focus on, if you can, face them away from the camera.  Always remember: when facing the camera straight on you will be shown at your widest, try and turn away from the camera at an angle to create a natural pose.

Smile - You never want to look too gummy or that you're cheesing too hard.  The best trick I ever learned was to  give off a natural laugh OR press your tongue to the roof of your mouth to have the most natural and beautiful smile. Never, ever do the duck or kissy face.  This look looks good on no one. Just be confident and most of all yourself!

Filters - Play around with some of the filters that really enhance your natural beauty.  You can never go wrong with a black and white image, they are classic and can really play up your beauty and hide any flaws that you may have.
