Top Officials Get Tough On Knockout Game

Posted: Updated:

Top city and police officials are getting tough on the so-called "knockout" game. They're trying to stop these vicious attacks *before they happen.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell has been following this story and joins us live in Center City.

City Officials acknowledge the violent knockout phenomenon that's been sweeping the country-may not be a huge problem in the city but they do say it is a big concern. The attacks are random. The victims unsuspecting and sometimes caught on video-for the world to see.

"This is not a game. It is not fun. It is serious," Mayor Nutter said.

On Monday night, tough talk by city officials sent out a warning about the knockout style attacks happening in cities nationwide including Philly.

"We know what's going on, we are aware of these types of activities. We're putting you on notice there will be severe consequences," Nutter said.

There has only been a couple of those knockout attacks in Philadelphia. A similar incident happened to a man on the Market Frankford El in October. One guy recorded it with his smartphone and then another guy walked up and punched him. The group of three scurried off on the train.

Police link the attacks to the problem of violent flash mobs mainly teenagers that roamed Center City two summers ago. They were incidents fueled by social media.

"We do pay attention to social media. And there are some keywords that have been used around these things just like with flash mobs," Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.

Police admit it's very difficult to determine a knockout attack from the nearly 5,000 aggravated assaults reported so far this year, but they also say it doesn't matter.

Police have arrested two teenagers in connection with a random attack of a man. On November 11, police say if you have teenagers-this should be a topic of conversation.
