LA Auto Show 2013: New BMW i3 - No Longer a Need to Fill'er Up

Posted: Updated:

This years LA Auto Show is unveiling a number of new all electric cars available early in 2014.  None may be attracting more attention than the new BMW i3 - the car companies first venture into a non-gas vehicle. Ready, Set, Go!

All electric cars are becoming more affordable, and more popular, in part due to a campaign to place 1 million electric vehicles on California roads in the next ten years. That is especially true here in California - which remains the king of hybrid & all electric cars.

I spent the day at the Los Angeles Auto Show Press Day last week in search of the greenest cars on the planet.  In part because I wanted to help you find your next car if you are thinking about going green.  Also, my Prius Lease is up next month and I wanted to decide if it was finally time to go all-electric.

The Toyota Prius has been very, very good to me.  I drive about 50 miles to work and back each day, about the average mileage I get in the Prius on a single gallon of gas.  I strongly considered moving on to the Prius Electric plug-in, in part because of that Green Sticker for the Carpool lane.

But something is lacking in the Prius for me.  I just need a car with a little more fun and if gets better mileage all the better.  OK, I dream of a new Tesla S! The undisrupted king of electric cars right now, with more torque than most gas street vehicles.  Price? Forget it!

Back down to earth, I selected four all-electric vehicles to blog about. Two new for 2014, the BMW i3 and Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive. I also looked at two late-model 2012 all-electric cars, the Fiat 500e and the Chevy Spark-EV.

For this Blog - we look at the new BMW i3.  Scheduled to hit local dealerships sometime late in the 1st quarter of 2014.

It's a funny looking car - but after a little test drive, I can tell you this car is ALL BMW!. I met up with John Hall, General Sales Manager at McKenna BMW in Norwalk for an interview to talk about the BMW's new i car series.  Yes, besides the i3, BMW will release it's potential Tesla Buster, the new i8 (not fully electric) but all the more beautiful the same. Hey, I can still dream right?

I'll be blogging about the other three electric cars in the coming days.  Will it be enough to get me to forget about another gas-powered vehicle?. We shall see.....

When 826 NYC, a nonprofit organization that fosters creative writing skills, asked children ages 9-12 to dream up the ultimate lemonade stand, the responses were huge. The winning project of  The Great Lemonation Imagination Collaboration was turned into a real lemonade stand complete with free lemonade in Manhattan's Flatiron District. The organization's members were also required to help run the stand that went up at Broadway and 23rd Street on Wednesday.

Times Square characters want to be taken seriously and want their tips. The mostly immigrant workers are now called the Association of Artists United for a Smile and are fighting to protect their jobs, in light of a recent crackdown. Jorge Duran says he stands around for hours, sweating inside a costume, and says it is annoying and unfair if he poses for a good picture and gets nothing.
