President Obama heckled during immigration reform speech

Posted: Updated:
SAN FRANCISCO -

Protesters interrupted President Obama during a speech to drum up support for immigration.

The President spoke in San Francisco Monday to push for comprehensive immigration reform, but toward       the end of his remarks, protesters cut in and shouted for him to end deportation.

The main heckler, a California student and undocumented immigrant - says deportation is tearing families apart.

"I need your help, our families are separated.  I need your help, there are thousands of undocumented immigrants that are torn apart every single day.  Mr. President, please use your executive order to halt deportation for all 11.5 million undocumented immigrants in this country right now.  We agree that we need to pass comprehensive immigration reform, at same time, you have power to stop deportation for all undocumented families in this country," said Ju Hong.

"Actually, I don't. And that's why we're here," Obama replied.

"Please, I need your help.  Yes, you can! Stop Deportation!" exclaimed Hong.

Then the crowd began to chant, "Stop deportation!  Stop deportation!"

The President allowed them to stay in the room.

"These guys don't need to go. Let me finish. No, no, no, let me finish.  No, he can stay there.  Hold on a second.  I respect the passion of these young people because they feel deeply about the concerns for their families.  Now what you need to know, when I am speaking, as President of the United States, and I come to this community, is that if in fact I could solve all these problems without passing laws in Congress, then I would do so. But we are also a nation of laws, that is part of our tradition.  And so, the easy way out is to try to yell and pretend like I can do something by violating our laws and what I'm proposing is the harder path, which is, to use our democratic processes to achieve the same goal that you want to achieve, but it won't be as easy as just shouting.  It requires us lobbying and getting it done."

The Senate has passed an immigration bill.

President Obama is asking for Congress to work together to pass a bipartisan immigration bill that will strengthen border security and create a path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants currently living across the country.
