A Snapshot of the Detroit Metro Region Job Market - What's Hot and What's Not

Between 2009 and 2012 the Detroit Metro Region employment has grown 5.9% fueled by a rebound of the economy and growth in key sectors:

·         Manufacturing +20%

·         Administrative and Support >+10%

·         Professional, Scientific and Technical Services >+10%

·         Healthcare and Social Assistance +3.6%

Job losses have been significant in other sectors:

·         Educational services

·         Arts

·         Entertainment and Recreation

·         Public Administration

Wayne County continues to lose residents, posting a 13% decline in population in 2012.

The Detroit Metro Region has 1.8 million persons actively in the job market.

Unemployment has fallen from a 2009 high of 15% to 10% today, still a fairly high number.

Top careers in 2012 in the Detroit Metro Region - High Employment /High Wage:

·         Registered Nurses

·         Mechanical Engineers

·         Industrial Engineers

·         Systems Analysts

·         Industrial Production Managers

The top 5 in-demand job titles from on-line postings roll up into 3 categories: Engineering, Healthcare and IT.

Employment in Detroit Metro Region is expected to grow 5.5% through 2018 fueled by expanding occupations and the need to replace existing employees.

In the Detroit Metro Region:

20% of jobs are held by those 55 yrs and older

20% are held by those 25 - 35 yrs. old

Healthcare and Social Assistance sectors have the highest number of older employees creating a future shortfall of critical skills in these sectors.

    Police on Long Island say one person has died and another has been seriously injured in a skydiving accident. Riverhead police say it happened at about 4 p.m. Wednesday at Skydive Long Island in Calverton. Police say the injured person was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.
