Dallas Police honor officer killed just after JFK assassination

Posted: Updated:

The weather cast a chill over the ceremony Friday honoring President John F. Kennedy 50 years after he was assassinated in Dealey Plaza.

While that went on as planned, the rain forced Dallas Police to move a service honoring J.D. Tippit, the officer killed by Lee Harvey Oswald in the hours after the assassination.

Family members and police officers from across the state gathered to honor Tippit at the Dallas Police Association. The ceremony was originally planned for the Oak Cliff street where Tippit died 50 years ago.

Witnesses said Tippit approached Oswald, who pulled out a pistol and shot him four times.

Tippit's widow, Marie, remembered her late husband's drive to protect others, especially his family.

After Marie Tippit spoke, dozens lit candles.

Many of the Dallas officers wore a special badge inscribed with J.D. Tippit's name.
