Students vote on Yale divestment of fossil fuels

Posted: Updated:
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Yale University undergraduate students are voting on a measure calling on the Ivy League school to divest a portion of its fossil fuel investments from its nearly $21 billion endowment.

The New Haven Register reports that the online referendum organized by Fossil Free Yale asks the Yale Corporation to consider whether the school should curtail its investment in fossil fuel companies. The referendum began Sunday and ends Wednesday night.

The vote is primarily symbolic. The results will be sent to Yale's Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility, which will make a recommendation to the Yale Corporation.

For the vote to be official, at least half of the 5,400 undergraduates must participate.

Yale's endowment is not open to public scrutiny and it's not known how much it invests in fossil fuel companies.
