UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A south suburban couple won $1 million in the Illinois Lottery after deciding to break routine and buy their ticket somewhere new.

Jarvis and Mauretia Carter of University Park have been playing the same numbers at the same gas station in Bridgeview for the last six years, a statement from the Illinois Lottery said.

But they decided to buy a ticket for the Nov. 2 Powerball drawing at a Matteson gas station while returning from a recent trip to visit family in Milwaukee.

"I told myself I really wanted to win a prize by Christmas, so we decided to try buying our ticket at a different place," Jarvis said in the statement. "I'm very happy we did!"

A few days after the drawing, Jarvis stopped at a gas station to check his ticket and found out they'd won $1,000,000.

The Carters, who have three children and three grandchildren, plan to pay bills, share with family and remodel their house, the statement said.

The store will receive a $10,000 bonus, 1 percent of the prize amount.
