Fairy Godmothers of Adoption

Posted: Updated:

Adoption can be a long, lengthy, and costly process. But there is help out there, if you look. Helpusadpot.org is one place you can look, when you need a helping hand.

After looking into many different options, Brian and Allan realized adoption wasn't going to be cheap. During the process they came across Helpusadopt.org.

"This was actually an agency that was reaching out saying we want to help you, we want to help you, give you money to start that family," says Allan Berkowitz.

At the time Helpusadpot.org was looking for LGBT couples to give grants to.

"We figured we had nothing to lose, so we sent in the application and without any hesitation they were willing to help us," says Berkowitz.

"We're the fairy God mothers of adoption," says Becky Fawcett, the founder and executive director of Help-Us-Adopt.org. "We always say Help-us-adopt.org is the missing piece of the financial puzzle to help complete an adoption."

"They just wanted to find non-traditional couples that were looking to have a family and needed some assistance," says Berkowitz.

"I am not a social worker, I am not an adoption attorney, I am just a mother- a mother by adoption who decided this organization needs to exist," " says Fawcett.

Becky Fawcett wanted kids. She tried to do it on her own, but couldn't.

"My husband and I did five rounds of in vitro fertilization - IVF, we got pregnant three times and had three miscarriages," says Fawcett.

Emotionally drained, physically exhausted, and financially strained, they decided to turn to the world of adoption. Today, Fawcett has two perfect children. Now she is helping others achieve their dream of becoming parents.

"We've helped to build 81 families by awarding $670,000 mission grants," says Fawcett. "There is help out there if you look for it, especially as part of a gay couple we had to look a little bit harder, "says Berkowitz. "Looking back now, time flew by and it seemed like it was nothing... he's (Adian) our life now. It's amazing."

    Wineries flourish in Brooklyn

Hundreds of oak barrels of wine are all stacked in one room. You might think this is Napa, California. But it's not. It's the Brooklyn Winery, located in what was once an old pickle factory in Williamsburg. Refrigerated grapes are brought in from the North Fork of Long Island and from the Finger Lakes and then aged in barrels. These days urban wineries are becoming more popular, and they're popping up all over the borough.
