BUFORD, Ga. -

A family of four says they are lucky to be alive after a morning house fire at their home in Gwinnett County.

Pat Holmberg tells FOX 5 News that she heard the fire alarm going off in their home in the 6100 block of Cumming Highway in Buford around 6 a.m. She says she found the garage on fire.

The family was able to get out of the home safely and called 911.

Firefighters say they fire quickly spread from the garage to the rest of the house due to windy conditions.

Emergency crews had to shut down a portion of Georgia Highway 20 from Burnett Trial to Riverside Road for about an hour to fight the fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
