Quinn heads out to see Ill. storm damage

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Gov. Pat Quinn says the state will help tornado-ravaged communities across Illinois with "every asset we have."

The governor spoke in Chicago Monday before traveling to central and southern Illinois communities to see storm damage first hand.

Sunday's storms killed at least six people and injured dozens of others. Hundreds of homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed.

Jonathon Monken is director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. He says the late-season storms were an "unprecedented event" in the state for November.

The governor is set to visit the Tazewell County community of Washington later Monday morning, where between 250 and 500 buildings were damaged or destroyed and about 120 people were injured. He'll also visit with Diamond, Gifford, Brookport and New Minden.

Quinn declared seven Illinois counties as disaster areas Monday. The declaration area covers Champaign, Grundy, LaSalle, Massac, Tazewell, Washington and Woodford counties.

The disaster designation is aimed at making it easier for state resources to help hard-hit communities.

Quinn's office says technical rescue teams have been dispatched across Illinois.
