TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The Democrat-led state Senate will try again to override a Gov. Chris Christie veto.

The measure under consideration Monday involves criminalizing the confinement of pregnant pigs in crates so small the animals cannot turn around. The offense would be punishable by fines of up to $1,000.

In his veto message, Christie said animal care standards are best left to state Agriculture experts. But Democrats accused the likely 2016 presidential candidate of pandering to Iowa farmers.

The bill passed the Senate with 29 votes, two more than the number needed for an override. It also passed the Assembly with more than enough for an override.

The Legislature has never succeeded in overriding the Republican governor. And GOP lawmakers have been unwilling to cast any vote that would undermine the governor.
