Bulletproof vest saves security guard's life

A FOX 10 EXCLUSIVE

PHOENIX -- A security guard talks to FOX 10 just hours after he was shot while on duty.  He could've died if it wasn't for a decision he made minutes before the gunman pulled the trigger.

The security guard had just arrived to the apartment complex where he provides security and security consulting.   Just minutes before getting out of his truck for work, he put on his bullet proof vest -- a decision that could have saved his life.

"I'm standing and I'm moving.. I guess I really should be thankful that I'm talking to you."

This man who doesn't want to identified -- is grateful.

"If I wouldn't have had my vest on, it could have been worse," he said.

He had just arrived at his job as a security consultant at this west Phoenix apartment complex Thursday night.
He got out of his truck around 11 p.m. to gear up near this parking spot -- when shots rang out -- he was hit once in the back.

"At the same time, we heard the shots, I was thrown against the side of my truck.. almost as if someone had hit me in the back.  I went down on the ground and dragged myself to the back of the truck and was yelling to my partner that I'm hit, I'm hit.."

The vest he put on just minutes before getting out of his truck -- stopped the bullet.

"It feels like someone hitting you or punching you with a baseball bat in your back.  You can feel this huge impact in your back and enough that it pushed me forward up against the truck, I was thrown up against the truck and then down -- so I knew I'd been hit.  My concern was how bad is it? Do I have a bullet inside my body somewhere?"

The man has been in the security business for 16 years.  The event shaking him a bit, but he says he will go back -- but not without his trusty vest.

"If someone is willing to do this and take that initiative and be that brazen enough to shoot at me now, what's to say they're not going to do it another day?"

The security consultant we spoke to says Phoenix Police arrived on scene right away.  They are now looking into this shooting and trying to pin-point where the shooter may have been.

The man we spoke to told us he has no idea who -- or why -- anyone would want to shoot at him -- he's just thankful for his life.
