CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

They've stopped taking donations at a Chicago center where hundreds of volunteers have been collecting food and medicine for typhoon victims.

But there are now issues with getting the goods to the people in the Philippines.

Friday was the day that donations were scheduled to be shipped out of the Rizal Center, 1332 W. Irving Park Road but there's been a problem with the transport.

The original plan was a cargo plane would carry the thousands of boxes to the Philippines, and an identified distributor would receive them. Now, relief organizers are scrambling for a plan B.

That hasn't stopped people from coming by to donate.

The Rizal Center is highly visible on Irving Park Road so people driving by see the boxes and bring more. Around back there are fully packed and wrapped pallets of goods, ready for shipment. Hundreds of volunteers spent the last four days working here, boxing and taping during the night, through cold temperatures.

The operation, called Help for Haiyan Chicago, has collected 5000 boxes and more than $10,000.

Governor Pat Quinn is scheduled to visit Friday morning. Organizers hope elected officials will help solve the transport problem. They promise that the donations will not be wasted.
