Lawmaker pushes for tackle ban in youth football

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A state lawmaker from New York City is still pressing his effort to enact a ban on youth tackle football.

Bronx Assemblyman Michael Benedetto has been blocked in his effort to ban the sport for kids under age 11, so he's introducing new legislation that ups the age limit to 14.

Benedetto says science shows the health risks are on the rise.

The Legislature has refused to tackle the measure and Benedetto still doesn't have a Senate sponsor.

Kids as young as five years old can play organized tackle football, though the state this year enacted a concussion law that requires a doctor's note to play again.

In Pop Warner football, the amount of contact time is restricted.
