Copper stolen from Kroger refrigeration units in Decatur

Posted: Updated:
DECATUR, Ga. -

Thousands of dollars of food had to be scrapped after thieves stole copper piping from the refrigeration units of a Kroger store in Decatur late Wednesday.

Several shelves sat empty on Thursday as perishable items such as meat, dairy, produce and seafood had to go with no refrigeration.

The refrigerators were fixed by late morning. Thanks to a last minute resupply, store workers began restocking the shelves.

Copper theft has been on the rise all across the country recently, with crooks selling the stolen metal for cash.

Air conditioning units are common targets, along with medical equipment that contains copper pieces.

DeKalb County police are investigating the Kroger theft.
