DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Internal affairs is investigating two members of the Detroit Police Department.

Five-year veteran police officer Devon Peyton is accused of working in a chop shop. 10-year civilian employee James Kerns was caught charging an officer for a copy of his medical records, Chief James Craig says.

The police corruption task force set up sting to catch Kerns in the act collecting the second part of the payment, after learning of the initial down payment.

"Mr. Kerns was not authorized to solicit or accept payments on behalf of the department, or the city, from any member. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that Mr. Kerns knowingly withheld the payment for his own use," Chief Craig says.

Peyton is also facing charges. The patrol officer from the north eastern district is accused of working in a chop shop. After a tip to DPD's commercial auto theft squad that a business on Meyers Street was stripping cars, Craig says the officer was caught red-handed dismantling an engine.

Officer Peyton was arraigned and released on a personal bond charged with two felonies, conspiracy to operate a chop shop and conspiracy to receive stolen property of a motor vehicle.

Kerns is charged with one felony count of embezzlement of a public official.

Both men have been suspended without pay.

"The actions of these employees are not conducive to those of the men and women who come to work every day and serve the citizens of this city with the utmost level integrity and dedication," Chief Craig adds.
