Ventra protests continue as CTA votes on 2014 budget

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

More demonstrations regarding the Chicago Transit Authority's troubled Ventra card payment program are expected, as the CTA Board met to vote on the 2014 budget Wednesday.

Protesters chanted outside Tuesday night's board meeting, which was supposed to be about the budget. But most of the people who spoke vented their anger on Ventra.

Riders have been complaining for weeks about problems switching to the program, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel is demanding a fix.

Things are so bad that the CTA was forced to scrap parts of the Ventra system and restore previous fare options to satisfy angry riders.

Alderman Anthony Beale said he will introduce a resolution on Wednesday, calling for hearings on the mess. Riders said they are tired of talk and want action.

"It's not like we can take another CTA," Megan Groves told FOX 32 News. "It doesn't put the focus on the public and we don't have a choice in the matter."

The one bright spot in all the protests is the fact the new CTA budget calls for no fare increases and no cuts in service.
