Mayor Reed to City Council: Come up with plan to keep Braves

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has challenged City Council members who oppose the Braves planned move to Cobb County, FOX 5 has learned.

On Monday, the Braves announced plans to leave Turner Field when their lease expires at the end of the 2016 season. They said they'll move to a new facility to be built near the intersection of Interstate 75 and Interstate 285 in Cobb County.

Some Atlanta City Council members insist that the city can put together a $100 million package to fund improvements to Turner Field. FOX 5's Morse Diggs has confirmed that Mayor Reed told those council members at an afternoon meeting on Tuesday to prove it and put together their plan in the form of legislation.

Diggs also reports almost everyone in the room was silent after the mayor issued his challenge.

Reed says Cobb County has simply come up with a financial package Atlanta cannot afford.
